Access Sacramento and KUBU-FM present the High School Short Radio Drama Contest

Create a five-minute short fiction audio drama for broadcast on KUBU 96.5FM.  
The top ten submissions will air on the radio! 

Open to any high school student in Sacramento County.

Top Ten Radio Drama Winners Will Air on KUBU 96.5 fm and through the KUBU mobile device app: Sunday, May 29th at 3 pm. 


  •  Submission can be created by one student or several students. (Collaboration is encouraged!). 
  • Submission cannot exceed five minutes, but must be longer than three. Do not include any credits.
  • Story must follow a three-act structure, with a clear beginning, middle and end.   
  • Submission content must be family friendly and without profanity. 
  • Must include sound effects and music. Any music is okay. The station pays licensing fees to play any music. Music cannot have a “Parental Advisory Explicit Lyrics” warning. 
  • Entry is free. Submissions are only accepted from teachers in a high school with students in Sacramento County.  

The teacher will email a list of the entries to Teacher will place the individual MP3 files into a shared folder. This will be shared with the contest coordinator at this email address. The MP3 files should be accompanied by a document listing the title of the radio drama, the full names of each producer, the school name and the teacher advisor. Example:

“The Village Monster was written and produced by Tami Sears, Jorge Perez and Amy Smith. Additional voices included Jake Bluth and Cindy Li. This was a project of students of (teacher name).” 


Teachers must collect a talent release form from each producer.   


Artistic Merit (60 points)

Content / Plot – 20 points Excellent, seamless structure to communicate the story to an uninitiated audience. The message/intent of the radio drama is clear on the first listening. Excellent dialogue; distinctive and compelling characters.

Creativity / Originality – 20 points The production displayed independent thought and imagination. The style and concept are novel and distinct.

Entertainment– 20 points Excellent overall impression, enjoyment factor, and replay value. Audio delivery is confident.

Technical Merit (40 points)

Sound / Audio – 20 points Audio levels are consistent; clear sound with an absence of distracting noises (buzzes, hums, hisses, etc.). The music and sound effects selections complement the story.

Sound / Audio – 20 points The audio transitions are seamless, complementing the continuity of the story.


First, Second and Third Place, along with seven Awards of Merit Awards will receive certificates. All of these winners will air on KUBU in a special show in late May 2022.
